Certified Wine Educator

Michael A. Schaefer, CSW, CWE is the Senior Wine Educator for Approach Guides Wine. Michael, a graduate of the University of Oregon, holds both the Certified Specialist of Wine and the Certified Wine Educator designations from the Society of Wine Educators. Michael has sat on the Board of Directors for the Society, acted as Chairperson of the By-Laws Committee, and Co-Chairperson of the Membership Committee. He also holds the Higher Certificate from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust, of London; and has been an instructor for the WSET at both the Certificate and Higher Certificate levels. He is currently studying for his WSET Diploma level exams. In October of 2011, he became a Certified Sherry Educator, after attending and successfully completing the course of study given by the Consejo Regulado of Jerez as well as being awarded the Center for Wine Origins Wine Location Specialist. Michael is a member of FIJEV, the International Federation of Wine and Spirits Journalists and Writers, and is the National Delegate for the USA. Michael is a certified wine judge, and has been involved as a jurist with some of the world’s most prestigious wine competitions, across the United States and throughout Europe. He has judged at competitions using numerous different criteria, including the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) standards, as well as those developed by the American Wine Society, and other groups.
